Roger McGuinn Cruising...Cruising...

Roger McGuinn of the Byrds
We just listened to an incredible talk by Roger McGuinn and thought it was time to write about this aspect of our voyage. While at sea, our days are surprisingly action packed with talks, demonstrations, movies and work shops. Viking has excelled in putting together a multitude of experiences. We feel an inner excitement as each one of these ignites a spark of enthusiasm, either rekindling a forgotten memory or opening up a door into aspects previously unknown

For instance, the former Byrd singer spoke of his beginnings in music, how listening to Elvis Presley compelled him to ask his dad for a guitar, and how his mother taught him to play it even though she knew only Banjo. (Later, just like Paul McCartney, he learned to play the banjo, by fretting 5 strings of his guitar.) How he was swept from one musical genre to another, climbing an interwoven ladder as both he and music in general matured, until he and his new band wrote "Mr. Tambourine Man" for Columbia Records and by this becoming a #1 hit, allowed them to compose their first album. Off they went, the rest is history (actually it will be tomorrow's talk).

Who ever thought days at sea could be so fascinating?

Sorry, got to stop writing...we are late for a lecture on  "The Whole Nine Yards,  Nautical Sayings and Superstitions."
